Call it the year of the gallery. In less than a year, the Foster area will get a third art gallery to add to the burgeoning district.
It was just this summer that BenWill Studio opened on SE 67th, just north of Foster and next to Performance Works NW. Months later, the studio has hosted showings, events, and now has an espresso bar and small sitting area. And not long after, Latchkey Gallery opened near SE 60th and Foster, making neighbors of Backstory Books, Wild at Heart Salon, and Tambayan restaurant. A short time later, Latchkey has co-hosted Foster’s first “Second Saturday” art walk.
And now it appears the arts are strongly taking hold on Foster, as a new and third gallery is near-ready to open in the same space that once housed Heads High Barbershop. Welcome, Flat Black Gallery!
With an apparent ode to graffiti art, Flat Black will be next door to Latchkey Gallery, completing a storefront turnover that was very recently Goyita’s Market, Heads High Barbershop, and an Asian video store. My, how things have changed.
The new gallery space bodes well for Second Saturdays, as there will now be a minimum of three venues to share, view, and buy art on a monthly basis (though, you should all visit during normal hours too). We’ll have a photo-recap of last weekend’s inaugural event, but it’s safe to say it will already be growing in its second go-around.
