Coming Soon: Flower shop-that-was, Now Flower shop-to-be

IMG_1184With the changing face of Holgate, between SE 68th and SE 65th, I suppose it only makes sense for the famed Kern Park Floral building to get in on the action.

What was once a presumed front business for lord-knows-what, the old and dusty flower shop-that-was is now the new flower shop-to-be.

Screen shot 2014-04-14 at 5.46.23 PMIt’s the same flower shop.  Just a spiffied-up version.  And even the “spiffied-up” part is to be determined.  But, hey, they have an “Opening Soon” proclamation in the window.  And said window is currently sealed off with paper, masking the changes to come.

This much we do know: no new permits are listed on Portland Maps, so any changes will (presumably) be IMG_1180minor.  Still, it’s a far cry from the once-vacant and feral lot with a lone, dusty and never open flower shop.

Now it’s several $300,000 homes and a flower shop-to-be.  What is happening?

I chatted with some guys outside the other day and they said it should be open by Mother’s Day!

  2. Good timing. I’ll be curious to see what they’ll have to offer.

Good evening. My apologies for the delay in replying to this post, however we’ve been a bit busy these days in an effort to “spiff up’ the place. My daughter & I are excited to announce that we’re re-opening under new ownership, new management, & a slightly new name, Kern Park Flower Shoppe. We will strive to provide quality flowers, plants, & service to the community. In addition, we are working to partner with some local artists to bring their good to the neighborhood. The original Kern Park Floral Co. was initially established in 1915 and had continued as a family owned & operated business until 2013. Effective May 6, 2014, will will be opening the flower shop as the 4th & 5th generation of the same family. We very much look forward to re-establishing ourselves in OUR neighborhood and look forward to meeting you.
We’d also like to send out a big thank you to the dozens of people that have stopped by to wish us luck and have shown their support.

    Sincerely,
    Holly & Kimberly
