In almost unprecedented fashion, fellow FoPoians will be able to show off their neighborhood this Saturday, both in its creative energy and community vibe. With two events lasting several hours each, the neighborhood will be putting its horticultural and artistic endeavors on display.
Starting at 10 a.m. this Saturday, June 16, the Fifth Annual Foster-Powell Garden Tour will kick off with 40 hosts sharing their gardens, varying between full-on urban farms and cottage gardens, to simple vegetable beds and perennial patches. In addition to the 40 gardens and 20 contributing sponsors, this self-guided tour will also include raffles and door prizes, including gift certificates to neighborhood favorites, such as Pieper Cafe and Speedboat Coffee, as well as our two neighborhood garden centers, Apex Wellness, and Torta-landia. There’s more, too.
The garden tour will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ending just in time to show off more of your neighborhood pride at Foster Art Night. This month’s FAN will include the regular lineup of hosts, but newcomer, Pieper Cafe, will be participating with the art of Brian Clark on display, as well as a 10% discount to folks who show up between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.. The evening of art and libations proceeds at 5 p.m. at the Slingshot Lounge, following the regular route east toward Gemini Lounge and O’Malley’s, with stops at the Crafty Underdog Shop, Torta-landia, and the Foster Road Salon along the way. While the night usually (d)evolves into more of a pub crawl, the intention is to foster the arts in the neighborhood, hence local artists’ work on the walls of host bars, readings at the Foster Road Salon, and live music at the various venues. As Foster Art Night grows, so too will its form, and we are looking for more ways to show off the arts in the neighborhood (i.e. performance art, more galleries, and street art). Please get involved and help FAN grow.
