I have never been disappointed in the food at the Arleta Library Bakery & Cafe, despite having taken my honey, my friends, and even my (picky out-of-towner) parents out for brunch there.
Their claim to the "Best Biscuits-n-Gravy" is entirely legitimate. A good friend and I visited last Friday and devoured a plate of the best biscuits this side of the Willamette... actually, on both sides of the Willamette, if you ask me. Juicy, savory slices of pork floated on top of home-made biscuits drowning in rich gravy with huge chunks of sausage. My medically-minded friend commented that they were "a heart attack waiting to happen" and then proceeded to inhale them with gusto. We balanced the savory biscuits with the pane dolce, a plate of sweet brioche from the Pearl Bakery. I also heartily recommend the Sicilian Hash (only on the weeekends) and the Tuscan.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (0 reviews)
I Heart Guapo! Here in Portland, when everyone and their second cousin has free wi-fi, it takes panache to win the heart of a true internet addict like myself. Guapo oozes panache. More than just a place to get yummy coffee and delicious pastries to fuel interneting, Guapo has a soul too. That soul is dedicated to promoting local, little-known, yet highly entertaining 'Ziners, artists, and comic books. (It also doesn't hurt that they hosted Kirsten Academy's charity art auction last year.)
Details to watch out for at Guapo: --Decoupaged tables, covered in comics --VooDoo Doughnuts on Saturday. --The local 'Zines and Comics Sections. --The classy wall art and creative chalkboard placement. Bravo, Guapo! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (0 reviews)
Am I really the first one to give them a review? Meticon is awesome. If you don't have a car, it's difficult to drag your broken bike across town for repairs, so routine stuff like fixing flats and getting things lubed or adjusted becomes a big chore. Just having Meticon in the neighborhood is a big part of why I could discard the car and go to biking full time, year-round, as I did three years ago --right about when Seth opened the store. Other things: (1) He makes a point of showing even the most inept customers (like me) what he's fixing and educates and encourages them to get better at doing it themselves; (2) Every year on Foster Street Fair Day he has a free bike clinic out on the sidewalk. Probably the first time I stopped by there was at the street fair three summers ago when he trued my wheel for nothing; (3) Seth is active in the Foster-Area Business Assoc and the FoPo NA, and was a great help as a member of the PDC Transportation Committee that recently got $2M earmarked for Foster improvements; and...

Drivin' around these here parts, you sure see a lot of strip mall bars. And dive bars with regulars, greasy food, and a line of gaming machines. When I lived in the Alberta/Mississippi Ave area, I was used to boutique bars, but I had nearly lost my Reno-native lust for the cheap, friendly neighborhood joint. (The Crow Bar did fulfill a craving or two.)
Well, now that I'm livin' it up Deep Southeast Style in Foster-Powell, I had to check out some of these local dive bars. I first took a friend visiting from Reno to Station 66 when we were tired of drinking beer around the house. Being able to walk to a joint ain't bad. When our beers tasted like the tap was off, the bartender replaced it without question. Good service.... |
