I work for SEIU Local 503 but my photos are for me

Who are you?

I’m a reasonably well educated person. I eat, sleep and wander the face of the earth as widely as I can afford. I grew up in the South and found that I couldn’t stand it any longer when Jeb Bush got elected Governor. I am spiritual but not religious. As Buckminster Fuller says, “I seem to be a verb.”

What do you do?

For work I talk to people caring for those in need (mental health and addictions services workers) and help them take care of themselves. I assist in organizing workers so that they can attain fairness and agency in their own environments. To see more about what I’m doing check out http://www.empoweroregon.com.

What is your inspiration? (Why do you do what you do?)

Fairness and the relative lack of it that people experience.

What brought you and/or your business to the Foster-Powell Community?

The organization I work for is committed to investing in areas and being an anchor-type employer. SEIU chose to buy and fix property in FOPO because it has easy access to I-205 and many of our members live nearby.

What is your favorite way to enjoy Foster?

Lunch time walks and after-work drinks.

3 Ways to unite the Fine Folks of Foster?

Unemployed worker centers-I see a potential to collaborate among job-seeking workers. If a group of workers begin sharing talents and skills they can create firms that can bring money and jobs. There is no business plan that demands that rich people be a part of people doing well for themselves.
Foster Road Parade. St Johns (my neighborhood) kicks off the parade season each May and brings tons of people out to meet and spend money.
Movie Night at the Park.
How do you envision the future of Foster?

SEIU establishes a thriving worker/community center with constant action stirring up connections and spreading social justice with our campus as the epicenter. Other firms see FOPO as a good place to set up shop so that FOPO is a destination neighborhood during the day and night.
