The Portland Bureau of Transportation has organized a series of neighborhood bike rides across the city in coordination with its “Portland By Cycle” campaign. The goal is to use classes and organized rides to encourage new bicyclers to get out on their bikes…or the once-bikers to dust off their trusty cruiser, 10-speed, fixed-gear or mountain bike in the hopes of promoting increased ridership.
We’ll skip over the rest of the background and jump to tonight’s ride. It’s in the neighborhood, and specifically aims to highlight public art in the area. We’ll presume the ride will look at art on both sides of Foster, not just in Foster-Powell. We could be wrong, though–there’s no route map, after all, so there’s no way to know in advance.
Before we share details so you all can make it out, and since there is no map, we’d like to highlight some of the street art that should be part of the ride. Whether they’re included or not is up to you to find out this evening.
SE Mitchell Street, between 76th and 77th Avenue
Paldo Market, Foster and SE 61st
Tango Berretin, SE 63rd and Foster
Bar Maven, SE 62nd and Foster
Phoenix Pharmacy, SE 67th and Foster
T-Rex, SE 70th and (just south of) Holgate
Authors, poets, rock stars, anime heroes and heroines, and other assorted characters at various locations…
And all the other random street art that helps give the neighborhood its character….good, bad or otherwise…
The list goes on, for sure. And if the PBOT ride doesn’t capture it all, we advise you get out and explore a little on your own.
As for tonight’s event, the PBOT-hosted ride starts at Essex Park at 6:00 p.m. Departure will be prompt, so arrive by 5:45. All ages are welcome, but are expected to helmet-up; kids should have an adult with them. Plan to bike for a couple hours.
