Sweetness Bakery, Speedboat Coffee, and Devil’s Point may have a new neighbor in the not so distant future. Or shall I say, neighbors? The parking lot that now sits empty in front of the former All Pets Playhouse is being considered for Portland’s latest planned food cart pod. According to an article in the Oregonian, “Carts on Foster” will someday make this vacant lot, as well as the eventually renovated and once-was doggie day care building, a flowered and treed home to food carts, festival space, and (indoor) bar. This will only add to Foster Road’s emergence as a food destination, with the likes of An Xuyen Bakery and Foster Burger recently opened nearby, as well as Slingshot, Bar Carlo, and Da Hui further down the road. I forgot to include O’Malley’s in the grouping of food offerings. Their brick oven produces a mean pizza.

One thing I’d like to see is a secondary draw to the pod space. In other words, something other than food that would attract people. Not to take away from the food carts, or the primary motivation to visit them, but another attraction would be nice. I love that there will be a space inside which will have good beer and wine on display. Even more, the idea of having mini festivals is awesome. Perhaps having a covered space designated for local musicians to play? Space for vendors to sell art? It’s a big space with a ton of potential. Food alone would be great, but adding more will just make FoPo that much more alluring.
A neighborhood “garage sale” in that parking lot, with food carts open for business, would be cool. I’d definitely attend to grab a bite and check out the wares, and probably bring a load of my own stuff for sale. [during non-rainy months]
A vintage clothing AirStream trailer just pulled into the lot! I read about it in the newspaper a couple weeks ago. Maybe this will bring more foot traffic to the food cart pod!
