Guttentag! Welcome to Portland, home of tasty eats on wheels, where German and Czech cuisines are beginning to make their mark. Today is the grand opening of VanSchnitzel’s, the schnizel van. As a girl who was raised on Spaetzle, I couldn’t be happier. One of my dreams for FoPo is that, one day in the not-too-distant future, we’ll have an array of food cards (perhaps in the triangle park near Guapos?). Speaking with my neighbors has revealed that, although we do have good food within walking distance, it’s not affordable to everyone. So, Food Carts are the answer, I’m convinced. It’s wonderful to see new carts opening on the East side. VanSchnitzel’s looks pretty special.
Someone there clearly knows social media, since the owners have been blogging about their van adventures for months at VanSchnitzels.com. The van will be open today from 11:00-2:00, so make your plans. They’ll be located at 26th, one block south of Holgate. (Score! Bike-able!) Here are a few of their offerings:
–Schnitzels Sandwichs (pork or chicken)
–Currywurst
–Bratwurst
–Schnitzel Platter (pork or chicken)
Sides: roasted potatoes, pommes frites (Whoa, really french fries… hello, Blue State!), spaetzle, red & green cabbage, salads.
They built their van themselves–complete with water, electricity, a big window, etc. I’m impressed and looking forward to checking these guys out. While I’m there, I’m gonna suggest that they park their van up in FoPo… we could rock their lunch hour, right?
I’m curious about what my neighbors think about food cards in FoPo. Yes? No? Where? What kind of food? What price range? What hours? Your input is always valued here!
Alvederzein for now!

Let’s bulldoze the Blockbuster and put some carts in there.
Hey, that’s a great idea… but I’m sure Blockbuster will fold of its own accord soon, thanks to Netflix. (Thank goodness PDX still has some indie rental stores, like that place on Clinton.) Here’s an idea: what about that place that was a car lot? I think it’s on Foster @ 72nd…
