I’m beginning a conversation over the next couple of days about what it is we love about living in this neighborhood. I’m doing this to learn a bit about you, my audience (and also ’cause it’s a fun topic). What is it that you love about this place we call home? I’ll kick things off with one of my favorite things about living in Foster-Powell: the availability of fast, delicious, healthy food without exhorbitant waits.
Portlanders are well known for their proclivity for long, relaxing weekend brunches at the area’s plethora of breakfast-y eateries. I’m a big breakfast girl– my grandfather and I used to have breakfast nook competitions about who could polish off more french toast, pancakes, or waffles. So, I love to eat breakfast out, but I HATE to wait. Thank goodness I live in Fo-Po, where you can always go to Bar Carlo if the Arleta Library Cafe is packing ‘em in like sardines.

While I wish this were the case, I really don’t think that Foster Powell has that great of food yet. Sure – we have a few places – and I would like to support more, but I usually go over to Division or to Woodstock in search of food. I am excited about Amor’s greek food, but to be honest, I think more random food comes to Foster vs. anything of quality.
Just a quick plug for Kern Park Floral at 6713 SE Holgate Blvd. I’ve stopped in several times recently and have been very happy with their friendly staff, reasonable prices and fresh selection.
It’s great food, fast, and with no wait. I hope more joints like that come to Fo-Po. Corn Ma, I agree that there is wonderful food all over the East side, and I do often jog down Woodstock to get some grub, but I am still grateful for the places like Bar Carlo and Arleta Library Cafe here in Fo-Po. And considering how much the ‘hood has changed in the last 5 years or so, it’s pretty great that we have the food options that we do.
I take “availability” to mean “availability and not “within neighborhood boundaries”, evidenced by the mention of The Arleta Library Cafe, which is in the Mt Scott Neighborhood (really, Co in So Fo Po, it is). While, I myself live in the Mt Scott Neighborhood (very close to The Arleta Library Cafe), I too am grateful for the availability of good food. I consider that to be any food within a 10 minute drive, which encompasses several neighborhoods. Also, why is The Arleta Library Cafe talked about as available and Woodstock isn’t, since they are in view of each other?
