Local business news request

With the tragic and unexpected loss of CAVA I’m trying to be more aware of our local businesses.  If anyone has information on new places, noticed something while driving by, or just has an opinion,  I’d like to hear it.

The Bar Carlo website says they had to cut their evening hours, but that they have started offering free movies Wednesday and Friday night.  They also posted a request: “please let us know what you’d like to see more of from us.”

Grandma’s Funky Furniture has moved east along Foster Rd.  Are they here to stay?

Amor Lounge is open.  Not the best decor in the world but a pretty impressive $5 gyro.

Anyone try that new Hawaiian place?  Are they a bar too?

And did anyone know there’s a really good Japanese restaurant on Powell?  I think it is called Ichidai.  Took me a whole year of walking by before I noticed it.

Anyway, if you like this place or others around the ‘hood, help support them and let us know something about them.

Thank you.

Thanks Ray and pdxbq for your comments. It sounds like you both know a lot about the businesses around here! Although I haven’t been able to keep up with it as I should, this site gets at least 200 “hits” a day, meaning that’s how many times people visit it. What I’m saying is that enough people read FosterPowellPDX.com that I bet posting here could really bring in some business. We have a section on business reviews– there’s only one so far, I believe. (Plenty of room for improvement! That’s always good. :) ) You can write reviews there, or just post your thoughts as articles. I will feature them on the main site. In the long term, I hope this site will support itself through advertising– in which case, top writers would get a cut. Just wanted to let you know how I can help. Let me know if you have any questions. My personal email is ColleenWelch at gmail dot com.Best,Colleen :) (Co In So Fo Po)

Also: Just to let you know what’s coming up at FosterPowellPDX.com, we’ll have a story on a new Lindy Hop class at the music center on Foster, which apparently has lovely ballroom-quality floors now. I’ve also been intrigued by the new BBQ take-out window on 72nd near Woodstock, so I’ll be writing about that soon. I have plenty of ideas, but never enough time, so if anyone’s looking for something to write about, let me know. (Writing on blogs like this can be a great way to build a resume…. it’s how I started, and now I write for an SEO company downtown.)

We’ve been to Da Hui a couple times. They have a restaurant side and a bar side. The bar is all tiki-kitsch – reminds me of the Brady Bunch mysterious tiki episode – but it makes for a fun atmosphere. The food is good (veggie yakisoba, grilled chicken skewers, pulled Hawaiian pork, etc.) and they make good drinks too. The service has been very friendly both times we were there.I hope Bar Carlo and Da Hui both stick around for the long haul.

Binh Minh Sandwiches- 7821 SE Powell – Very cheap! (under 4 bucks) Great Vietnamese sandwiches made on fresh baguettes.Speedboat Coffee- 5115 SE Foster Rd. – Coffee, great breakfast sandwiches, and darn good smoothies…not to mention super friendly people.Ma Tona’s- 5919 SE Foster Rd. – El Salvadorian food. Quite good. Folks seem to be happier with the more authentic dishes.Anyone else?

Bar Carlo is going to be opening in the evenings again. Starting August 14th, they will be open until 10pm 6 days a week. Go for dinner, stay for drinks and help them keep their doors open in the evening.

My co-worker who was raised in the Phillippines drives over from Beaverton to visit Tambayan Restaurant at 6014 SE Foster. She recommends calling ahead for takeout, and getting their whole fish entrees.

My bf and I can’t get enough of the $1 sushi at Sushi Sushi, at Foster & 82nd. They were doing dollar days on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it was always a joy to go in there and see people from all walks of life enjoying excellent rolls at excellent prices. Now they’re doing it on Saturday nights, too! Dollar Sushi on Saturdays? Life is good. ;)

Sweet! We hadn’t been able to make it in on a Tuesday yet – good to know they expanded the deal!

The vacant, former Cava space will soon be Foster Burger, which will be run by some of the folks at Pok Pok and Sel Gris.

I hated to see Cava, the beloved Fo-Po eatery, disappear, but I have to admit that I’m salivating over Foster Burger. I’ve been hearing good things online… anyone up for posting a review? I’m on a New Years Resolution cleanse at the moment… it may have to break soon, if people keep posting tantalizing Tweets.BTW, we tweet @FosterPowellPDX. Ooooh… here’s the menu, from Portland Food and Drink: http://www.pdxfoodpress.com/2009/12/29/foster-burger-is-now-“Dijon-crusted cheese-stuffed portobello mushroom?” I must be in heaven.
