Among playing the ‘spot the Jeep’ game, listening to my son make up new words in his car seat, and laughing at Dr. Laura rip on some poor soul on the radio, navigating Portland’s new snow-made potholes has become the new driving game of choice for my wife and me. We’ve marveled at how the environment can create such a wide range of obstacle courses while slugging along in our daily trips to and from work, calling each other frantically when we find a new gaping crevice on our routes.
But, as all things good games come to an end, the weather last Tuesday created a fresh layer of snow, covering up our swerving pathways and devlishly hiding the dangers of driving in the snow. In fact, while driving to work last Tuesday, my wife found herself suddenly behind a two car pileup that had begun with the first driver finding one of these hiccups on Madison. My wife had little time to stop, and even if she did, the slippery ice would do nothing to save her year-old Yaris…which, the front end apparently is made entirely of sugar cubes.
Here’s to our road crews frantically trying to cover up these road bumps! And, while I’m at it, here’s to the future days of sunshine and safer driving.

Hi absorenson. Great voice in this story, and good observation. I’ve been more finding myself swerving around new potholes, too. I wonder if the fabled federal stimulus money will go toward filling them?
